First Study Topic:

From the very beginning we are taught a message from the Lord that we should fear Him. He presents it to Adam and Eve like this, "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." Gen 2:17

Now from this same very beginning of time for mankind there was an opposing voice speaking to man saying, "And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:" Gen 3:4

From these simple Scriptures we can learn about why we should fear God and who says we shouldn't fear God.

The Lord Jesus Christ (Yeshua Hamashiach) described satan this way, "...When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." Satan is a liar. He lied from the very beginning when he countered the one simple commandment God gave Adam and Eve.

Later moses explains the proper terms in fearing God. "And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.," (Exodus 20:20) So here Moses is distinguishing the proper way to fear god. Fear God if you sin. But if you don't sin you have no reason to fear God.

We should fear god because God promises punishment against disobedience. We learn from the very beginning that God keeps His punishment and His word regarding punishment.

This is an important place to begin this bible study.

 Second Study Topic:

The fear of man has always been a curse. People who do not have the Lord in their lives are the ones who fear man. Remember the spies Moses sent to spy out the land of Canaan? They came back and brought a report of fear. the fear of man.

Joshua and Caleb stood up and "Rent their clothes......"

 7. And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.

 8. If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.

9. Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not." Numbers 14:97-9

The Lord Jesus the Christ (Yeshua HaMashiach) stated that we are not to fear man but fear God only. "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." Matthew 10:28
